Synopsis

No (2012), Pablo Larraín's political drama, is available to watch online on iFILM. Cornered by international pressure in late 1988, Chile's dictator Augusto Pinochet agrees to put his rule to a public vote, and the opposition is handed just fifteen minutes of late-night TV each night to convince a frightened country to say "no."

The campaign lands on René Saavedra (Gael García Bernal), a young ad man used to selling soda and microwaves. Instead of dwelling on torture and fear, he pitches the one thing nobody expected from Pinochet's opponents: a rainbow, a jingle, and the promise of happiness. His allies are furious, his own boss is moonlighting for the regime, and unmarked cars start lingering outside his home. The clock runs down to the October 5 plebiscite.

Larraín shot the whole thing on period U-matic video cameras, so the staged scenes blend seamlessly into the real 1988 broadcasts, a trick that carried the film to a Best Foreign Language Film nomination at the Oscars. It rewards anyone curious about how advertising and a TV image can topple a regime. Stream No (2012) online on iFILM.
