Synopsis
Güeros (2014) is a black-and-white Mexican tragicomedy from Alonso Ruizpalacios, available to watch online on iFILM. Mexico City, 1999: a student strike has shut the university down.
Teenage troublemaker Tomás gets shipped off to his older brother Sombra, who's been drifting through the strike with his friend Santos — no classes, no money, no plan. When they hear that Epigmenio Cruz, a fading folk-rock legend, is dying in a city hospital, the three pile into a beat-up car to pay their respects. The trip turns into a ramble across the invisible borders of a sprawling metropolis.
Ruizpalacios's first feature took the Best First Feature prize at the Berlinale and a fistful of Mexican Ariel awards, Best Picture among them. Grainy monochrome, jazzy cutting and a sly affection for the whole idea of "revolutionary youth." One for fans of road movies and the French New Wave. Stream Güeros (2014) online on iFILM.
