Synopsis
The Winter Guest (1997) is Alan Rickman's directorial debut — a quiet Scottish drama you can watch online on iFILM. He adapted his own stage production, and cast Emma Thompson alongside her real mother, actress Phyllida Law.
One frozen winter day in a small coastal town. Frances is stuck in grief after her husband's sudden death; her mother Elspeth arrives uninvited, driven less by duty than by her own loneliness. Elsewhere a teenage boy falls for a girl, two old women make a circuit of local funerals for the company, and Frances's son wanders the ice. None of these stories collide — they just breathe the same cold air.
Rickman shoots with chamber-play restraint: close faces, long silences, a grey sea that goes nowhere. Thompson and Law are performing grief and love between people who actually share it — and that distinction shows in every scene.
