Sword Art Online the Movie — Progressive: Aria of a Starless Night (2021) is an A-1 Pictures anime feature you can watch online on iFILM. Director Ayako Kono retells the opening arc of the SAO universe from Asuna Yuuki's perspective — shifting the spotlight away from Kirito and showing how a model student with zero gaming experience becomes a frontline fighter.
Asuna borrowed her brother's NerveGear on a whim and ended up locked inside a virtual world where ten thousand players can't log out. Death in-game means death in reality. Rather than waiting for someone else to clear the floors, she learns the game mechanics cold and pushes to the front, where the loner swordsman Kirito takes notice. Inori Minase voices Asuna; Yoshitsugu Matsuoka returns as Kirito.
Released in Japanese theaters in 2021, this is the first film in the Progressive retelling, which reworks the Aincrad arc level by level with more detail than the original series had time for.
