Synopsis
Alice, Sweet Alice (1976) is an American psychological horror-thriller you can watch online on iFILM. Directed by Alfred Sole, the film is set in a tight-knit Catholic community in Paterson, New Jersey in 1961, and features Paula E. Sheppard, Linda Miller and a very early screen appearance by Brooke Shields.
Nine-year-old Karen is strangled inside a church on the day of her First Communion. All eyes turn to her twelve-year-old sister Alice — withdrawn, jealous, given to cruel pranks and capable of an unsettling blankness. But the investigation keeps twisting, and certainty about who is actually responsible slips further away with every new detail. Sole gives the audience no comfortable place to land.
What sets this apart from most 1970s genre films is the weight it puts on atmosphere over gore. The Catholic guilt, the ugly apartment blocks, the suffocating family dynamics — they do more work than any knife. It is a film that keeps its dread low and quiet right up until it doesn't.
