Lassie

Lassie (2005) is Charles Sturridge's family adventure drama, one you can watch online on iFILM. In a Yorkshire mining village on the eve of the war, a family that has run out of money is forced to sell their beloved collie to a wealthy duke.

The dog is carried off hundreds of miles to the duke's estate in the Scottish Highlands. But missing young Joe more than any kennel can fix, Lassie breaks loose and sets out to walk the length of Britain back home. The road throws strangers at her — some cruel, some kind. The human cast is first-rate: Peter O'Toole, Samantha Morton, Peter Dinklage and Kelly Macdonald.

This is a fresh take on Eric Knight's classic novel Lassie Come-Home, the same story that became a famous film back in 1943. Sturridge keeps the sentiment in check: the landscapes are bleak, the period feels lived-in, and the dog's loyalty never tips into syrup. Solid family viewing that won't bore the adults in the room.
