Synopsis
Man Hunt (1941) is Fritz Lang's wartime thriller, free to watch online on iFILM. British big-game hunter Alan Thorndike is holidaying in the Bavarian hills in the summer of 1939 when he lines up his rifle on Adolf Hitler himself. Whether he means to pull the trigger he hasn't decided — and then the guards seize him.
Beaten and left for dead, Thorndike claws his way back to London, only to find the hunt has reversed. Nazi agents shadow his every move, led by a chillingly polite handler played by George Sanders, while a working-class girl named Jerry (Joan Bennett) becomes his one ally. Lang stages the chase as a tightening trap — fog-soaked docks, the Underground, rooms with no clean way out.
Walter Pidgeon carries the lead, with a very young Roddy McDowall in support, in an adaptation of Geoffrey Household's novel Rogue Male. It was one of Hollywood's earliest pictures to name the Nazi threat outright, before America even entered the war: lean, tense and free of speechifying. A treat for fans of vintage noir and of Lang.
