Synopsis
Shinjuku Incident (新宿事件, 2009) is a Hong Kong crime drama you can watch online on iFILM — and a deliberate departure for Jackie Chan, who plays a Chinese illegal immigrant navigating the criminal underworld of 1990s Tokyo. Directed by Derek Yee, the film has none of Chan's usual stunt comedy in it.
A farmer called Steelhead crosses into Japan looking for a woman he loves. What he finds is hard labour, police raids, and the grimy margins of Shinjuku's immigrant district. His friend Jie (Daniel Wu) sees the yakuza-adjacent world around them as a ladder. Steelhead resists for a while. Then he doesn't. Fan Bingbing appears in a supporting role.
Chan has said this was the performance he wanted to give for years — no choreography, just a man being ground down by bad circumstances and worse choices. Stream Shinjuku Incident online on iFILM.
