Synopsis

Charles Pike (Fonda) is a gullible heir to a beer fortune who spent a year in the Amazon studying snakes and returned knowing nothing about people. Jean (Stanwyck) is a card shark who works ocean liners with her father, spotting marks from across the dining room. Charles is perfect. Then she actually falls for him. When he figures out her game and walks, she decides revenge is in order — and the second half of the film is Jean reinventing herself as the aristocratic Lady Eve Sidwich, watching Charles fall for the same woman twice.
