Freeway

Freeway (1996) is a dark American crime thriller directed by Matthew Bright — watch online on iFILM. Reese Witherspoon plays Vanessa Lutz, a seventeen-year-old with a mother in jail and a home worth leaving behind at any speed.

Vanessa is driving cross-state to her grandmother's place in LA when a charming school counselor named Bob Wolverton — Kiefer Sutherland, all warmth and menace — offers her a ride. She quickly figures out that Bob is the serial killer preying on teenage girls along Interstate 5. The film then does something the setup doesn't prepare you for.

Director Bright built the whole thing as a pitch-black reworking of Little Red Riding Hood set on the American highway system. Witherspoon is ferocious in the role, completely unbothered by dignity, and Sutherland plays against his usual heroic type with visible relish.
