Synopsis
Take Care of Your Scarf, Tatjana (Pidä huivista kiinni, Tatjana, 1994) is Aki Kaurismäki's pocket-sized road comedy, and you can watch it online on iFILM. It runs barely over an hour, yet it packs a full trip across southern Finland in a battered old Volga.
Two men do the driving: Reino, a mechanic who never says no to brandy, and Valto, hooked on coffee and terrified of his own mother. Along the way they pick up Tatjana, an Estonian, and Klavdia from Kazakhstan. There's no shared language and almost no dialogue — the men simply freeze with shyness where another film would drown everything in chatter.
Out of that awkward silence Kaurismäki shapes a tender little melodrama about loneliness and the things people can't bring themselves to say. Black-and-white frames, rock'n'roll crackling from the radio, glances doing the work of speeches. His regulars Kati Outinen and Matti Pellonpää lead it.
