Synopsis
The Inn of the Sixth Happiness (1958) is a biographical drama directed by Mark Robson — watch it online on iFILM. Gladys Aylward, an English housemaid, couldn't pass the missionary society's entry requirements. She bought her own ticket to China and made her way to a remote village in Shanxi province.
She ran a mule-drivers' inn, worked as a government foot inspector, won over the local Mandarin, and eventually fell for a half-Chinese officer. When the Japanese invasion swept through, Gladys led over a hundred orphaned children on a weeks-long march across mountain terrain to safety.
Ingrid Bergman plays her without the usual polished saintliness — stubborn, tired, and recognizably human. Robert Donat's turn as the Mandarin was his last role; he died shortly after filming wrapped. Stream The Inn of the Sixth Happiness online on iFILM.
