Synopsis
Valley of the Dolls (1967) is Mark Robson's melodrama based on Jacqueline Susann's scandalous bestseller, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Three young women chase fame in show business and pay a brutal price for the ticket.
Anne leaves a quiet New England town and ends up the face of a cosmetics empire. Neely (Patty Duke) claws her way to Broadway stardom, then implodes under the weight of it. Jennifer (Sharon Tate) is so beautiful the industry only ever sees her body. The "dolls" of the title are pills: downers at night, uppers at dawn, around and around until the habit swallows the life. Barbara Parkins and Susan Hayward fill out the ensemble.
Critics savaged it in 1967, and that's exactly why it endured — today the film is embraced as glorious camp and a sharp little parable about the cost of fame. It's also one of Sharon Tate's final roles, which lends the whole thing a sad afterglow. Perfect for fans of overheated retro melodrama. Stream Valley of the Dolls (1967) online on iFILM.
