Synopsis
The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971) — watch online on iFILM the British horror-comedy that gave Vincent Price one of his defining roles. Directed by Robert Fuest, the film follows a disfigured musical genius who blames nine surgeons for his wife's death and decides to repay them in kind — working methodically through the ten plagues of Egypt.
Bats, rats, locusts, ice. Each killing is staged like theatre, and Inspector Trout (Joseph Cotten) has to crack the pattern before the list runs dry. Phibes himself never speaks aloud: his voice pipes through a gramophone tube connected to his throat, which is one of many details that makes this film stranger than most things released in 1971.
Fuest leans hard into Art Deco sets, jet-black humour, and pure visual invention, keeping the body count almost secondary to the spectacle. The result is less a slasher and more a baroque revenge opera — and the ending earns a genuine emotional sting. Stream The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971) online on iFILM.
