Florinda Bolkan carries the film as a woman who cannot be sure of her own innocence. Stanley Baker is the detective who keeps tightening the net. Fulci was still working in the space between mystery and outright horror here, and the pull between those two modes gives this 1971 film its unsettling quality — the nightmare logic bleeds into the investigation until neither Carol nor the viewer can trust what they've seen.
