Synopsis
Watch The Secret Life of Words (2005) online — a Spanish-Irish drama directed by Isabel Coixet, starring Sarah Polley and Tim Robbins. Hanna, a reserved and solitary nurse, takes a temporary assignment on an isolated oil rig to care for Josef, a man badly burned in an explosion. The platform sits alone at sea. There is nowhere to go. The two of them are left with only each other.
Josef has lost most of his sight. Hanna barely speaks. But silence on a small rig has a way of turning into confession. What Hanna carries from her past is heavier than anything she lets on, and Coixet paces the film like a slow unclenching — each scene letting a little more light through. Julie Christie appears in a supporting role.
The film's screenplay won a Goya Award, and the writing earns it. This isn't survival drama or a sea story — it's a study of two people who've both run out of places to hide. Stream The Secret Life of Words (2005) on iFILM.
