Synopsis
Kaili Blues (2016) is Bi Gan's debut feature, and you can watch it online on iFILM — a slow, rain-soaked drift through southern China where past and future quietly trade places.
Chen, a small-town doctor and former convict, suspects his young nephew has been handed off to strangers. He sets out to find the boy and ends up in a village called Dangmai, where he keeps running into people who feel like memories — and others who seem to belong to a future that hasn't arrived yet. The plot is almost beside the point.
What people remember is the form. At its center sits a single unbroken shot running roughly forty minutes, the camera trailing characters by motorbike, by boat and on foot through one misty town. The Chinese title 路边野餐 translates loosely as "roadside picnic." This is hypnotic, patient cinema for viewers happy to sink into a mood rather than chase a story. Stream Kaili Blues online on iFILM.
