Synopsis
Green for Danger (1946) is a British murder mystery you can watch online on iFILM. It's the summer of 1944, V-1 flying bombs are falling on Kent, and a wounded postman is rushed into a rural military hospital. He dies on the operating table. An accident, everyone agrees — until a nurse stands up at a party and says out loud that it was murder. She doesn't live to explain.
Enter Inspector Cockrill, and with him Alastair Sim, who walks off with the whole film. His detective is vain, sarcastic, forever certain he's right and forever wrong. Suspicion falls on the surgical team that handled the dying man: two surgeons, an anaesthetist, three nurses, any of whom could have swapped a gas cylinder. Director Sidney Gilliat keeps the killer hidden in plain sight, masked and gowned in the same green as everyone else, while air-raid sirens wail outside.
Adapted from Christianna Brand's novel, it remains one of the sharpest wartime whodunits Britain ever made, partly because Sim plays a sleuth who blunders rather than a flawless genius. Stream Green for Danger (1946) online on iFILM.
