Synopsis
12 (2007) is a Russian courtroom drama you can watch online on iFILM, written and directed by Nikita Mikhalkov. Twelve jurors file into a school gymnasium to decide whether a young Chechen man killed his Russian stepfather — a decorated army officer. The evidence looks airtight. Eleven of the twelve are ready to convict in minutes.
The twelfth isn't. Sergei Makovetskyplays the holdout — not someone who knows better, but someone who notices the verdict was reached too fast. Over the course of one long day, each man in the room is forced to argue out loud, and the arguing strips away the surface. Sergei Garmash, Valentin Gaft, Yuri Stoyanov, Alexei Petrenko fill out a cast that carries real weight; Mikhalkov himself plays a retired general who saves the most difficult moment for last.
Conceived as a loose riff on Sidney Lumet's 12 Angry Men but planted firmly in post-Chechen Russia, the film received an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. It earns the runtime. Stream 12 (2007) online on iFILM.
