Synopsis
At Home Among Strangers, a Stranger Among His Own (1974) — watch online on iFILM. This was Nikita Mikhalkov's debut feature, and it arrived fully formed: a Soviet action film built on the bones of a Spaghetti Western, set in the tense, unfinished aftermath of the Russian Civil War. A group of former Red Army soldiers, now Cheka officers, plan to ship a wagonload of gold to Moscow to buy food for a starving population.
Before the train leaves, a body turns up and the gold disappears. Suspicion lands on Yegor Shilov — partly because his brother fought for the Whites. Shilov goes after the gold alone, moving through bandits and shifting loyalties while trying to clear his own name. The cast pulls together Yuri Bogatyryov, Anatoly Solonitsyn, Sergei Shakurov, Alexander Kaydanovsky, Konstantin Raikin, and Alexander Kalyagin; Mikhalkov took one of the central roles himself.
The camerawork and editing draw straight from Leone, and Eduard Artemyev's score gave the film a sound unlike anything else in Soviet cinema at the time. Watch At Home Among Strangers online on iFILM.
