Synopsis
Cairo Conspiracy (La Conspiration du Caire, 2022) is a political thriller from Swedish-Egyptian director Tarik Saleh — watch it online on iFILM. A fisherman's son named Adam earns a coveted place at Al-Azhar University in Cairo, the intellectual heart of Sunni Islam. Days after his arrival, the Grand Imam dies, and the succession fight begins immediately.
Everyone wants a piece of the next appointment: Egyptian intelligence, rival religious factions, palace operators. Adam, still finding his way around the campus, gets recruited by a state security agent played by Fares Fares — drawn into surveillance work he barely understands and cannot safely refuse. The deeper he goes, the clearer it becomes that there is no neutral ground in the building.
Saleh shot the film in Istanbul, denied access to Egypt, and the slight dislocation gives it an eerie accuracy — recognizable but off-kilter in exactly the right way.
