Mother

Mother (Madre, 2019) is a Spanish-French thriller from director Rodrigo Sorogoyen, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Marta Nieto stars as Elena, a woman who lost her six-year-old boy a decade ago.

The last she heard of him was a phone call from a beach in France: he was lost, he couldn't find his father, and then the line went dead. Years later Elena runs a restaurant on that very stretch of coast. The wound has scarred over until a French teenager turns up who looks unsettlingly like her vanished son. Their bond pulls them both in and rattles everyone around them.

The feature grew out of Sorogoyen's Oscar-nominated short and keeps its nerve-shredding long takes. Nieto took the acting prize at the Venice Film Festival for this part. It's slow, adult cinema that grips through grief rather than plot twists. Stream Mother (2019) online on iFILM.
