Synopsis
The Singer (Quand j'étais chanteur, 2006) is Xavier Giannoli's French romance, available to watch online on iFILM. Alain Moreau fronts one of the last working dance-bands in Clermont-Ferrand, painfully aware that his audience is thinning out and his best years are behind him.
The local women still treat him like an idol on the dance floor, but the rooms keep getting emptier. Then he meets Marion, a young real-estate agent who is guarded, distracted, and seemingly tied to someone else. Alain falls for her with a clumsiness that men his age are supposed to have outgrown. Cécile de France plays Marion; Mathieu Amalric is the man from her present.
Giannoli builds a quiet film about aging and dignity, and Gérard Depardieu sings live throughout, doing less acting than simply existing on screen, heavy and honest. It competed in the main selection at Cannes. A good pick if you like slow French cinema about feelings, told without ornament. Stream The Singer (2006) online on iFILM.
