Synopsis
The Black Balloon (2008) is the Australian drama you can watch online on iFILM. Thomas is about to turn sixteen. His army father has just moved the family to a town in New South Wales, his mother is pregnant, and his older brother Charlie — who is autistic — can't be left alone for a second without trouble following.
Falling for Jackie, a girl from his swim class, gets complicated fast when Charlie might melt down in the street, at the family dinner table, or right in front of her. Thomas is ashamed of his brother and hates himself for the shame. Rhys Wakefield plays the teenager raw and exposed, Luke Ford gives Charlie no pity-softened edges, and Toni Collette anchors the whole house with stubborn maternal love. First-time director Elissa Down drew on growing up with two autistic brothers, and it shows in every uncomfortable scene. The film took the Crystal Bear at Berlin and a clutch of Australian awards.
