Synopsis
Marguerite (2015) is a French-Belgian comedy-drama directed by Xavier Giannoli that you can watch online on iFILM. Paris in the 1920s: a wealthy aristocrat named Marguerite Dumont has spent years hosting private recitals at her château. She sings with absolute conviction — and absolutely no ability to hold a note. Nobody has ever told her.
Her husband nods politely. Her servants applaud. Avant-garde journalists write backhanded reviews she reads as praise. Then Marguerite decides to perform at the Opéra — for a real audience. Catherine Frot plays the role straight, never winking at the camera: this is a woman who genuinely loves music, and the gap between her passion and her talent is both the film's joke and its heartbreak.
The character draws from the real story of American soprano Florence Foster Jenkins, who inspired a Hollywood biopic the same year. Giannoli chose a different angle — not a chronicle, but a question about what it costs to believe in yourself when everyone around you is lying. The film landed 11 César nominations and took four, including Best Actress for Frot. Watch Marguerite online on iFILM.
