Synopsis
The Crazy Stranger (Gadjo Dilo, 1998) is Tony Gatlif's music-soaked drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. A young Frenchman named Stéphane trudges through the Romanian winter with a single clue: the name of a singer whose voice, on a worn cassette, his late father loved. No address, no language, no plan — just that.
An old Roma man, Isidor, takes him in, and Stéphane ends up living in a village where he's the gadjo, the outsider. Bit by bit he sinks into their world — the drinking, the feuds, the music that runs all night, a reckless infatuation with the dancer Sabina. Romain Duris plays a man who came chasing a song and stumbled into an entire way of life. Gatlif, of Roma descent himself, films the camp with no postcard prettiness — loud, muddy, alive.
The live music isn't a soundtrack here so much as the air the film breathes, and at the Locarno festival it picked up honors including a prize for its score. The ending turns suddenly brutal and reframes everything light that came before it. It's for viewers who love ethnographic cinema, Balkan rhythms and stories of a man remade far from home.
