Synopsis
Joy of Life (庆余年, 2019) is a Chinese costume series — part comedy, part palace intrigue, part drama — that you can watch online on iFILM. Zhang Ruoyun leads the cast, with screen veteran Chen Daoming as the emperor.
The premise toys with a body-swap across time. The mind of a 21st-century man wakes inside Fan Xian, the illegitimate son of a noble in the fictional Kingdom of Qing. He grows up in a remote seaside town under a mysterious mentor, then sets off for the capital as a young man. Waiting there: a tangle of court conspiracies, the buried secret of his late mother's origins, and high politics where his modern way of thinking turns into his sharpest weapon. Surviving means building up strength, money and influence.
Adapted from Mao Ni's wildly popular web novel, the show grew into one of the most talked-about Chinese hits of the late 2010s and drew a much-anticipated second season. Its tone keeps leaping — from palace thriller to near-sitcom bickering — and that swerve is half the fun. Built for anyone who loves long Eastern sagas of scheming, a charismatic lead and a series that winks at its own genre.
