Synopsis
Impetigore (Perempuan Tanah Jahanam, 2019), directed by Ko Kwang-duk collaborator Joko Anwar, is an Indonesian horror film you can watch online on iFILM. It took the Grand Prize at the Fantasia International Film Festival and was Indonesia's submission for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film.
Maya (Tara Basro) is barely scraping by in Jakarta when a stranger attacks her with a machete — not a random act, she realizes, but a targeted one. She and her best friend Dini (Marissa Anita) travel to the remote village of Harjosari, where records show Maya inherited a family estate. The house is still standing. The villagers steer clear of it. The cemetery next door holds far too many children's graves for a settlement this size. What Maya gradually uncovers is that her family's past isn't buried — it's been festering, and the entire community has been paying a price she didn't know she owed.
Joko Anwar builds dread through accumulation rather than jump scares. The horror here comes from ordinary people who have done something monstrous for the sake of survival, and the film's final explanation is colder than any creature could be. For fans of slow-burn folk horror, this is one of Southeast Asia's sharpest entries in the genre. Stream Impetigore (2019) on iFILM.
