Synopsis
To Hell and Back (1955) — watch online on iFILM. Jesse Hibbs directed this WWII biography with Audie Murphy playing himself: the most decorated U.S. combat soldier of the war, telling his own story on screen.
Murphy grew up during the Depression and enlisted at eighteen partly to keep his younger siblings fed. Four years followed through Sicily, Italy, France, and Germany — more than thirty American and French decorations, and a sequence of situations that ended most men who found themselves in them. He was nineteen for most of it.
The film came out a decade after the war, when those events were still living memory for millions of American viewers. That Murphy chose to play himself rather than hand the story to a bigger name gives it a weight no casting director could have replicated. Stream To Hell and Back online on iFILM.
