Synopsis
Sissi (1955) is the Austrian romantic drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Ernst Marischka. Romy Schneider as the young Bavarian princess Elisabeth and Karlheinz Böhm as Emperor Franz Joseph turned this film into the defining Christmas release across Central Europe in the mid-1950s, and it launched a trilogy that ran through 1957.
Elisabeth — known to everyone as Sissi — has no interest in court life. She fishes, wanders the forest, and wants nothing to do with formal ceremony. A chance encounter by the water brings her face to face with a young officer who has no idea who she is; she has no idea he will soon be Emperor of Austria. His mother, Archduchess Sophie, has already arranged things: the bride should be Sissi's older sister Néné. Franz Joseph overrules her.
For Romy Schneider, then just fifteen, the role made her famous across Europe and became the image she spent decades trying to move past. The film itself is a gentle, unsentimental fairy tale — no villains, no tragedy, just the quiet drama of someone choosing their own path against a mother's plans. Stream Sissi online on iFILM.
