Synopsis
The Tobacconist (Der Trafikant, 2018) is a German-Austrian drama you can watch online on iFILM. Vienna, 1937, with the Nazi annexation only months away. A country boy named Franz Huchel comes to the capital and takes a job as an apprentice in a small tobacco shop.
Behind the counter Franz grows up fast. One of the regulars who buys cigars every morning is an elderly professor — Sigmund Freud — and an unlikely friendship forms between the teenager and the old psychoanalyst. Franz also falls hard for a Bohemian dancer named Anezka, while his boss Otto, a war veteran missing a leg, keeps the shop running like a tiny fortress as the politics outside turn violent.
Director Nikolaus Leytner adapts Robert Seethaler's bestselling novel, and the film carries one of Bruno Ganz's final performances as Freud — weary, wry, fully human, with none of the textbook polish. A quiet, melancholy story about a private life crushed under the weight of history. Stream The Tobacconist (2018) online on iFILM.
