Synopsis
White Zombie (1932) is a landmark American horror film you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Victor Halperin. Bela Lugosi stars as Murder Legendre, a voodoo master whose zombie workforce runs a Haitian sugar plantation in absolute silence. Neil and Madeline travel to Haiti to marry. Their host, Monsieur Beaumont, wants Madeline for himself. When she refuses, he goes to Legendre — a man who can remove the soul from a living body and leave the body walking. The wedding dress is barely off before the deal goes wrong.
Lugosi carries the film with almost no dialogue: just the stare, the hands, the quality of stillness that Halperin's camera finds in him. What the film invented in 1932 — the zombie not as rotting corpse but as a person emptied of will, controlled by someone else — became the genre's foundational image.
