Synopsis

Balloon (Ballon, 2018) is a German historical thriller from director Michael Herbig — stream it online on iFILM. Two East German families, the Strelzyks and the Wetzels, spent nearly two years secretly sewing a homemade hot-air balloon out of spare fabric, intending to float across the Iron Curtain into West Germany.

Their first attempt fails meters short of freedom. The balloon crashes, and the Stasi finds the wreckage. Now the clock is ticking: investigators close in while the families must start over — new balloon, new fabric, new hiding spots, new lies for every neighbor who might be an informant. Karoline Schuch and Friedrich Mücke carry the tension without grand speeches; it's just exhaustion and terror in quiet suburban kitchens.

Herbig built his reputation on German comedy, which is exactly why his restraint here lands so hard — no stirring score cues, no slow-motion heroics, just the grinding math of a desperate plan. Stream Balloon (2018) online on iFILM.
