Synopsis
Barbara (2012) is a German drama by director Christian Petzold — watch it online on iFILM. Nina Hoss plays a Berlin physician exiled to a rural East German clinic after filing a single exit visa application.
It's the early 1980s. State security monitors her apartment, trails her on the street, and turns every colleague into a potential informant. Barbara keeps to herself, especially around the clinic head André — played by Ronald Zehrfeld — who is clearly more than just curious about her. Across the Baltic, her boyfriend is waiting with an escape plan already mapped out. She just needs to hold it together long enough. Then a young patient from a labor colony, a defiant runaway, throws the whole calculation into doubt.
What Petzold builds here is not a thriller. It's a quiet, precise film about what you give up when you choose to run — and what you might not be willing to leave behind after all. Hoss carries the film with almost no exposition; her Barbara has learned to hide everything, including her own hesitation. Stream Barbara (2012) online on iFILM.
