Adriana (Giovanna Mezzogiorno) is a reserved, solitary medical examiner. At a family gathering laced with an occult ritual she meets a younger man, Andrea (Alessandro Borghi). One night of desire, a promise to meet again — then nothing. Andrea never shows. Soon afterward his body lands on Adriana's own autopsy table. Police tell her the dead man had been secretly photographing her asleep and naked. From there the line between investigation, obsession and her own unreliable memory dissolves completely.

Özpetek isn't building a whodunit with a tidy answer; he's building a sensual maze where Naples, with its folklore of wandering souls and doubles, sets the rules more than any clue does.
