Synopsis
Queen of the Desert (2015) is a historical drama from Werner Herzog that you can watch online on iFILM. Nicole Kidman plays Gertrude Bell — the British writer, archaeologist and political operative who crisscrossed Arabia on horseback at the turn of the twentieth century, charted unmapped desert routes, and fed intelligence to London that shaped the borders of Iraq, Jordan and Saudi Arabia. James Franco and Robert Pattinson appear as the two men she loved and outlived.
Herzog builds the film around landscape as much as character. The desert is not backdrop here — it is the point. Bell chose the emptiness deliberately, and the director shoots it with the same patience he brings to her face. The tribal leaders she met, the maps she drew, the dispatches she sent back — none of it feels rushed, because the film refuses to compress a life this large into a tidy arc.
The pace will lose some viewers and reward others. This is not a conventional biopic with a third-act triumph; it is an elegy for someone who was inconvenient to everyone in her life and indispensable to the empire anyway. Stream Queen of the Desert (2015) online on iFILM.
