Synopsis
Heart of Glass (Herz aus Glas, 1976) is a German drama from Werner Herzog you can watch online on iFILM. A Bavarian village lives by one craft alone: blowing its prized ruby-red glass. Then the old master dies — the only soul who knew the formula.
Without the secret, everything unravels. The works fall silent, the factory owner loses his mind chasing the lost recipe, and a heavy dread settles over the town. On its edges wanders the herdsman Hias, who sees what's coming — fire, blood, the end of the world he knows. Drawn from a story by Herbert Achternbusch, it plays like a grim folk tale where catastrophe gathers slowly and can't be stopped.
The strangest thing about the film happens off screen. Herzog directed almost his entire non-professional cast under hypnosis, which is why they move and speak as if sleepwalking — slowed, vacant, somewhere else entirely. The result is a state of mind more than a plot: meditative, unsettling, like little else around it. Best for viewers ready to sit with something slow and odd rather than be entertained.
