Synopsis
Monsieur Ibrahim (2003) is a French drama you can watch online on iFILM. On a working-class Paris street in the 1960s, thirteen-year-old Momo gets by largely on his own, raised by a father slowly sinking into depression.
The boy's one refuge is the corner grocery run by old Monsieur Ibrahim. A quiet Sufi Muslim, Ibrahim sees far more in Momo than the lonely kid who shoplifts cans off his shelves. When the father vanishes for good, Ibrahim takes the boy in for real — teaches him to smile at strangers, then buys a red convertible and drives him clear across Europe toward the sea. Omar Sharif plays Ibrahim so gently that the part feels lived rather than performed.
François Dupeyron adapted the film from Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt's play, building a friendship that reaches across faiths: a Jewish boy and an elderly Sufi finding each other against everything meant to keep them apart. Sharif took the César for this role, the only one of his long career. It's warm, unhurried cinema for anyone who likes a film that comforts instead of crushing.
