Synopsis
Rocket Science (2007) is an American indie comedy-drama you can watch online on iFILM, written and directed by Jeffrey Blitz, who took the Sundance directing prize for the film. Hal Hefner is fifteen, he stutters badly, and somehow he ends up on the high-school debate team.
The reason is Ginnie Ryerson, played by a very young Anna Kendrick — sharp, driven, and convinced she can turn anyone into a competitor. Reece Thompson plays Hal with the specific kind of awkwardness that isn't played for laughs: a kid who genuinely can't get the words out, trying to impress a girl who communicates entirely in words. Jonah Hill appears in a supporting role. The debate tournaments are brutal in the best way.
Blitz made his name with the documentary Spellbound, about spelling-bee contestants, and that same eye for the gap between ambition and ability carries over here. This isn't a film where the underdog wins through sheer will — it's more honest than that, and funnier for it. Watch Rocket Science (2007) online on iFILM.
