In Her Name

In Her Name (Au nom de ma fille, 2016) is a French drama directed by Vincent Garenq — watch online on iFILM. In the summer of 1982, fourteen-year-old Kalinka Bamberski dies at her stepfather's Bavarian villa. German authorities rule it an accident and close the case. Her father André disagrees.

What follows takes twenty-seven years. Daniel Auteuil plays André Bamberski as a man who converts grief into a single, exhausting purpose: getting German physician Dieter Krombach, played by Sebastian Koch, tried in France. Bureaucratic walls, cross-border jurisdiction, dead ends — Bamberski kept going when anyone else would have stopped.

The case is real. The Bamberski–Krombach affair ended in a 2011 conviction and became a landmark in European law involving a private citizen's extradition manoeuvre. Garenq made something quieter than a courtroom thriller — a study of a father who decided that stopping meant admitting his daughter's death counted for nothing.
