Synopsis
The Silence of the Sea (Le Silence de la mer, 1949) is a French wartime drama you can watch online on iFILM. It marks the directing debut of Jean-Pierre Melville, adapted from Vercors' clandestine Resistance novella.
Occupied France. A German officer, Werner von Ebrennac, is billeted in the home of an old man and his niece. Unable to fight back, they pick the one weapon left to them: silence. Night after night Werner talks alone by the fire about his love of French culture, about music, about a naive dream of two nations made whole. The pair never answer him with a single word. Yet on the young woman's still face something forbidden slowly begins to surface.
Almost the entire film is one man's monologue before two mute listeners, and out of that hush Melville draws a tension sharper than any shootout. A chamber piece about dignity, occupation and a feeling that is not allowed to exist. Best suited to viewers who love slow, literary cinema where everything that matters goes unsaid.
