Synopsis
Early Spring (Soshun, 1956) is a Japanese drama by Yasujirō Ozu, available to watch online on iFILM. Every morning Shoji Sugiyama rides a packed commuter train to a Tokyo office and a job that leads nowhere. His marriage to Masako has gone quiet. Then a younger colleague, nicknamed Goldfish for her wide eyes, drifts into his orbit.
The affair unfolds slowly, almost wordlessly. Ozu isn't filming passion; he's filming exhaustion, two people who stopped really hearing each other years ago. Ryō Ikebe plays the worn-down salaryman, Keiko Kishi the colleague, and Chikage Awashima the wife who senses the truth long before she admits it. The camera barely moves, every frame composed with quiet precision, the silences carrying more weight than the lines. A hundred and forty-five minutes spent watching an ordinary household crack.
This is late Ozu, a study of the postwar office class and the small compromises that hollow out a life, shot from his signature low tatami-level view. Best suited to viewers who love slow, grown-up cinema with no melodramatic push. Stream Early Spring (1956) online on iFILM.
