Synopsis
A Christmas Carol (1984) is a British-American television fantasy film you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Clive Donner from a script by Roger O. Hirson. George C. Scott plays Ebenezer Scrooge — and his take on the character is the main reason this version holds up. Where most portrayals lean into cartoonish cruelty, Scott plays Scrooge as a man worn down by decades of self-inflicted isolation. The coldness reads as something that was built, not born.
On Christmas Eve, the ghost of his old partner Jacob Marley — Frank Finlay, draped in chains — comes to warn him that three spirits will follow. Each one peels back a different layer of Scrooge's story: the warmth he abandoned, the damage he does now, and the future that awaits him on his current course. Roger Rees plays nephew Fred, David Warner is Bob Cratchit.
Scott never overplays the transformation. The shift comes gradually, through specific details rather than sweeping gestures — which makes it credible. Stream A Christmas Carol (1984) online on iFILM.
