Synopsis
The Russia House (1990) is a Cold War spy romance you can watch online on iFILM. Director Fred Schepisi adapted John le Carré's novel with Sean Connery as Barley Blair, a rumpled London publisher recruited by British intelligence to run an operation inside the Soviet Union at its most fragile moment.
In Moscow, Barley meets Katya — played by Michelle Pfeiffer — who passed him a manuscript written by a dissident Soviet physicist. The documents contain details that could rewrite the nuclear calculus between two superpowers. What the handlers want is data. What Barley can't stop thinking about is Katya. Roy Scheider and James Fox make the intelligence apparatus feel genuinely cold, which only sharpens the contrast with what Barley is willing to risk.
This is le Carré without car chases: slow, precise, set against the strange hopefulness of the glasnost era. It respects the audience enough not to explain everything twice. Stream The Russia House (1990) online on iFILM.
