Synopsis

At its heart is Kanichiro Yoshimura, a low-ranking samurai whose clan pay can't feed his wife and children. Love for his family drives him to Kyoto and into the ranks of the Shinsengumi, the garrison guarding a dying order. There, every man faces the same choice: join the rebels or die for the old world. Kiichi Nakai and Koichi Sato lead the cast.
The film took the Japan Academy Prize for Picture of the Year, and its director, Yôjirô Takita, would later win an Oscar for Departures.
