Synopsis
The Sword of Doom (大菩薩峠, 1966) is a Japanese black-and-white samurai film directed by Kihachi Okamoto, available to watch online on iFILM. Tatsuya Nakadai plays Ryunosuke Tsuruta — a swordsman of terrifying precision who has shed every last scrap of conscience.
He doesn't kill for money or revenge. He kills the way other people breathe. Set during the collapsing final years of Shogunate Japan, the film follows his travels across provinces as a trail of bodies and ruined lives accumulates behind him. Toshiro Mifune appears as the master swordsman Shimada, and the eventual confrontation between pure skill and pure emptiness is where the film applies its real pressure.
Based on a serial novel by Kaizan Naito that ran from 1913 and was never finished by its author, Okamoto honored that incompleteness: the film cuts off mid-scene, unresolved, which felt unsettling to audiences in 1966 and still does. It is one of the few samurai pictures where the duel sequences are less frightening than the man performing them. Watch The Sword of Doom (1966) online on iFILM.
