Synopsis

Beanpole (2019) is a Russian war drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Kantemir Balagov and co-produced with the United States. It picked up the Best Director prize in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes — a debut feature pulling that off is rare. Victoria Miroshnichenko and Vasilisa Perelygina carry the film as two women who survived the front only to face what survival left behind.

Leningrad, 1945. The shelling has stopped. Iya works hospital shifts, tall and slow, prone to freezing spells she can't explain. Masha arrives from the front with a specific, devastating request — she wants a child, and she needs Iya's help getting there. Their bond is close and scarred in equal measure. The film tracks how the body holds war long after the fighting ends: in stillness, in flinching, in a gesture that means too much.

Cinematographer Ksenia Sereda built the palette around khaki and dark green — the colors of uniforms and wound dressings, chosen without accident. At 130 minutes it doesn't rush anything. Stream Beanpole online on iFILM.
