In the Courtyard

There he meets Mathilde, newly retired, who notices a crack creeping across her living-room wall. What begins as small talk hardens into a fixation: she becomes convinced the whole building is about to come down. The further she sinks into that fear, the harder the withdrawn Antoine, no model of stability himself, works to keep her afloat. The two form a fragile, mismatched bond. Catherine Deneuve plays Mathilde quietly, without self-pity, opposite Pio Marmaï. Salvadori holds the tone right between sad and funny, never tipping into farce or melodrama.
