Synopsis
The Trouble with You (En liberté !, 2018) is Pierre Salvadori's crime comedy, easy to watch online on iFILM. A young widowed cop discovers her late, much-loved husband was a crook in a badge, and quietly sets out to undo at least one of his crimes.
Detective Yvonne (Adèle Haenel) served under her husband Santi, a Riviera town's idea of a hero. The reality is grubbier: one of Santi's frame-ups put an innocent man, Antoine (Pio Marmaï), behind bars for eight years. Newly released and barely able to function in the outside world, Antoine becomes Yvonne's guilty project, and her meddling kicks off a chain of escalating, gleefully unhinged misadventures. Audrey Tautou turns up in a part that cuts sharply against her sweeter screen image.
Salvadori pulls off a tricky balance, letting heists and brawls share the frame with an almost slapstick tenderness, the tone lurching from farce to real ache without ever turning crude. The film won the SACD Prize at Cannes Critics' Week. It's for anyone who likes French comedy with a double bottom, where the funny scene turns sad on you mid-laugh.
