Great Freedom (Große Freiheit, 2021) is an Austrian-German drama directed by Sebastian Meise — watch it online on iFILM. Hans Hoffmann goes to prison again and again in post-war Germany, not for any violence but for who he loves. Paragraph 175 keeps pulling him back behind bars long after the war is over and the country has been rebuilt.
Inside, he shares a cell with Viktor, a convicted murderer who wants nothing to do with him. Their relationship spans decades of forced proximity — three separate sentences, three different stages of life — and slowly turns into something neither man has a word for. Franz Rogowski and Georg Friedrich carry every scene with almost no dialogue, and that restraint is exactly what makes the film work.
Sebastian Meise builds a love story inside a legal trap, and the film is more interested in how people survive repetition than in grand gestures. It won the Jury Prize in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes 2021. Stream Great Freedom online on iFILM.
